Board News - Taken from the BOT Blurb on the School Newsletter

August 2011

In the media lately there have been numerous reports about school Boards who have submitted their charters to the Ministry of Education, without reference to National Standards. Our Board is not one of these schools and does have National Standards targets in our charter. However, our Board and staff have found working with the National Standards challenging, and understand why some schools have chosen to oppose them. Several members of the Board recently attended a meeting looking at how to transform the school library into a Future Focussed information centre. This was a useful course and several initiatives will now be added to our strategic plan. On the professional development front, the Board have approved principal John Channer’s attendance at a conference in the Wairarapa, where a dozen schools have been invited to present the work they have been doing in their schools. On the review front, the Board are currently reviewing our ‘Children with Special Needs’ policy. Parents are encouraged to comment on this policy. This can be accessed through our school website, under the Official Bits button. Then go to the Schooldocs link.

July 2011

Much of the July Board of Trustees meeting was spent working on questions for stakeholders in the development of our strategic plan. The Board are continuing to undertake a range of professional development opportunities, with several members of the Board due to attend a presentation on transforming a school library into more of an information centre.

June 2011
The Board of Trustees have finally received our confirmed report from the Education Review Office. The Board and staff are pleased with the report, particularly as it confirms the current direction of the school. The Board would like to advise that there have been some minor changes to the school website, on both the Board and Curriculum pages. The Board of Trustees were pleased that we have received funds from two successful grant applications, one to support the Year 6 camp, and another for our Green Kids Gardening Group. The Board and teaching staff are continuing to develop our school’s strategic plan for 2012 – 2014. The school community will have an opportunity to consult on the strategic plan in the next month or so. We have received a few plans for an upgrade on the school playground. The Board will shortly ask for community input into the new playground design. On a final note, Sharmeeni Kumar has resigned as a member of the Board of Trustees due to time commitments. The Board would like to thank Sharmeeni for her involvement as a parent trustee.

 May 2011
At the May Board of Trustees meeting, the Board responded to our draft Education Review Office report from our visit at the end of last term. The Board are really pleased with the report. The Board also looked at our National Standards student data and the end of year goals that have been set. Parents and caregivers will be sent home data relating to their own children, as well as end of year goals next week. The Board would like to highlight that National Standards are new, and the staff have worked hard in incorporating the National Standards into our assessment and reporting system. Due to the speed of implementing the Standards, there is still some caution as to the accuracy of some results. In school moderation (checking and comparing results with other teachers for accuracy) and across school moderation (doing checks between schools) have been occurring in an effort to increase the reliability of our National Standards data.

March 2011
The March Board of Trustees meeting saw the Board discussing the draft 2011 Annual Plan. This will be made available to the school community shortly. The Board have also started the early phase of strategic planning, helping to set the direction for the school for the next four years. As part of this process, you will be given an opportunity to provide input into the future of the school. The Board also discussed the recently completed Achievement Review, which focuses on a range of areas including the achievement of Maori students, attendance, results of students starting at our school, use of the special needs register, differentiated learning within classes, and individual education plans to name a few. The actions from the Achievement Review will be incorporated into this year’s Annual Plan to be addressed. This document has been placed online in the Board of Trustees section. Finally, the Board are investigating further asset purchasing, with a focus on continuing to commit to technology spending. More details will be provided as decisions are made.

February 2011
The Fraser Crescent School Board of Trustees recently held their first Board meeting of the year. A unanimous vote ensured that Gina Wood will continue on as Board Chairperson, at least for the start of the year. The Board are pleased that Michelle Picard and John Channer’s Masters are coming to an end, and feels that it is an asset to the school in having two staff with Masters Degrees in Educational Leadership. The Board are currently reviewing the Cultural Diversity policy and encourage you to have your say. You can input into this survey by going to the school website www.frasercres.school.nz and clicking on the Official Bits button and then going to the Schooldocs page. If you would like to fill in a paper copy of the survey, please enquire at the school office. The Board are delighted with the finished upgrade of the school swimming pool. The overnight camp might provide an opportunity to check out the pool if you haven’t already done so. Finally, the Board feel well prepared for our upcoming Education Review Office visit and look forward to the feedback we will receive.
